I am very strong in teaching Jazz/Blues and Rock guitar. I feel it is important to know beginning to intermediate music theory. I would recommend going as far as possible. I am very strong on basic reading ability along with tablature reading. This of course depends on the style the student is interested in. My methods depend on the students experience and age. Generally I always leave half of the lesson for whatever the student wants help with. The other half is going through my curriculum.

Since my own interest is in avant-garde, experimental, improvised music, my teaching emphasis is on developing the student's original voice and creative confidence outside the confines of any specific genre. On guitar, I'm comfortable with folk, rock, blues, and the basics of jazz playing, but my tendency is to try and identify in an abstract way what concepts or techniques will most serve the student's development, whether that be an increased understanding of notation, harmony, melody, some…

Children's Instruments for Miniature Musicians
Children’s Instruments for Miniature Musicians As W flings his miniature body across his miniature piano, creating an avalanche of sound with his stomach and knees and feet (note: his hands are nowhere near the keys), I wonder if he inherited his father’s musical ability or if he’ll end up like me—tone deaf and instrument-phobic, left playing the egg shaker at his in-laws’ family gatherings. I hope for the best and so encourage his musical experimentation (until the headache creeps up and begs for a quiet, introspective child prone to reading and drawing and other silent activities) with a variety of kid-sized instruments like Melissa and Doug’s piano complete with color-coded keys and songbook. Plan Toys also nurtures novice musicians with a starter baby drum or a more advanced drum set made from natural rubber wood and non-toxic paints.... |
