I can teach drum charts to those looking to start reading, or also by ear, which is how I mostly learned. However, I also am knowledgeable in music theory from my studies as an undergrad, and could apply that to my guitar lessons.

My emphasis is classical or Fine Art music. I am a classical singer, and I sing in several professional ensembles in Portland. In graduate school I studied and taught Music Theory and Composition. I am also an active pianist, and have accompanied singers visiting the Portland area in local recitals. My expertise is both wide and specific within the European classical tradition. That said many of my recent voice students have been singers in local rock bands. All musicians, regardless of their…

I am classically trained in my vocal lessons. I can take what I have learned and make it work for someone that is wanting to sing a certain style or genre. When it comes to singing, in my opinion, the most crucial thing to teach is breath management. From there, I feel as if, everything else starts to fall into place. By that I mean that the ground work has been set.

While I specialize in rock, experimental, electronic, noise, popular, folk, and art music, I do know some jazz. In order to pass my guitar jury to graduate with a B.A. in music, I had to demonstrate knowledge of all basic major and minor triads plus dominant, minor, major, half-diminished and fully diminished 7th chords. Additionally, 2-octave major and minor scales in 6 positions, in broken thirds and triad patterns were required, along with four memorized pieces within the jazz genre. The b…

Children's Instruments for Miniature Musicians
Children’s Instruments for Miniature Musicians As W flings his miniature body across his miniature piano, creating an avalanche of sound with his stomach and knees and feet (note: his hands are nowhere near the keys), I wonder if he inherited his father’s musical ability or if he’ll end up like me—tone deaf and instrument-phobic, left playing the egg shaker at his in-laws’ family gatherings. I hope for the best and so encourage his musical experimentation (until the headache creeps up and begs for a quiet, introspective child prone to reading and drawing and other silent activities) with a variety of kid-sized instruments like Melissa and Doug’s piano complete with color-coded keys and songbook. Plan Toys also nurtures novice musicians with a starter baby drum or a more advanced drum set made from natural rubber wood and non-toxic paints.... |
