Mary Jane Shoes for your Inner Eco-Fashionista

Mary Jane Shoes for your Inner Eco-Fashionista

September 6, 2009   Margaret Teich

Mary Jane shoes are a classic, comfortable shoe traditionally worn by younger girls in formal occasions (think black patent leather) and older women for a more casual look. The style is quite simple; a single strap – normally a buckle strap — over the instep or ankle and a rounded toe box. These five examples of sustainable Mary Jane shoes are all sweetness and range in fanciness and fabrication.

Instead of a pair of sneakers, try out a pair of super-casual super-comfy Mary Janes from Simple . Made with an organic cotton upper and a bamboo lining for wicking, no other shoe allows your inner child to be released while still being stylish, like these.

Here is a pair of a bit more formal Mary Janes – heels — from J-41 , which is Chrysler’s shoe company. The outsoles are constructed with partially recycled rubber and the heel height is mellow enough for all of us comfort-seekers.

While the beautiful color options sure make these Patagonia Mary Janes special, (case in point: a truly gorgeous Bordeaux hue) the shape of these shoes are surprisingly fashionable. And wearable. Moreover, Patagonia’s eco-aware design uses standout stitching instead of toxic solvents to keep the shoe’s upper together and attached.

Super-basic yet sassy shape? Check. Groovy color options? Check. Eco-friendly recycled cork footbeds? Check. It looks like Keen ha...

Which Womens Gladiator Sandals Are Right for You?

Which Women’s Gladiator Sandals Are Right For You?

July 21, 2009   Margaret Teich

When gladiator sandals are worn right, they are comfortable, flattering and fashion forward. However, they can easily be worn very, but very, wrong. Because gladiator styles range from a subtle shout out to Venus and the rest of her Roman Goddess posse to a full-on Render unto Caesar your entire leg , finding the right pair and knowing how to wear them can be tricky. So, here are a few of the very best eco-friendly gladiators, and tips on how to wear them.

When rocking a candy colored gladiator, like these Melissa Mystery Gladiators , which are made from Melflex recycled rubber, let the sandal be the look’s focal point and keep the rest of your outfit toned down. If the gladiator reaches high up your shin, pair it with shorts or a mini skirt in order to elongate the leg. And, shorter women beware: this is not a gladiator style that works for all of us.

With all of the straps to support the foot, gladiators can be a joy to wear traveling or walking around an outdoor summer festival. These recyclable jute gladiators by Rocket Dog will compliment any look –pants, skirts, shorts– because they are low on the foot and expose the ankle, the slimmest part of the leg.

The delightful patent sheen on these faux leather David gladiators by Olsen Haus demonstrate the direction gladiators are headed in. The gladiator sandal has been in style for more than 3 seasons now and so designers must find new ways to reinvent the look. Shiny patent and metallic colors are the most updated gladiator styles.

Many people complain about arch support in flat sandals, gladiators included. The Alkali sandals by Patagonia , made with recycled materials, have a slight arch elevation that adds extra support. Unlike a stilleto, or any other fashion heel, the gladiator is supposed to be comfortable. If it doesn’t have the arch ...
